Years ago it was common for individuals to enter the field of medical assistant without formal training. They received on-the-job training by other office staff or by the medical professionals working alongside them. Typically the only educational requirement was that they have a high school diploma. Now because of the competitive nature of the job and the fact that employers prefer to hire candidates that have formal training, current candidates are finding that it is a necessity to receive medical assistant training.

Online medical assistant programs can be found as well as the traditional brick and mortar campus settings. Some traditional schools also offer both. Medical assistant school accreditation is done by either the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). The accreditation is an approval that assures the student and the future employer. Schools that are accredited undergo regular reviews that insure educational quality, school integrity and that the schools continue to improve the program.

Medical assistant classes typically include subjects on clinical and diagnostic procedures, first aid, anatomy and physiology, computer applications, laboratory techniques, and also classes that teach medical billing and insurance coding, medical law and ethics class. Students will also be learning about patient relations, office practices, and record keeping and accounting. A medical assistant student will spend approximately 9 months to a year in classes. At the end of the training there is generally a certificate or diploma that will be earned. If the program is for an associate’s degree in medical assisting the training program will usually last 2 years. This degree program can lead to higher education or can lead to real growth in the medical field.

The medical assistant school should give personal attention and offer a well-rounded educational experience.

The training will involve practicing on dolls or fruit as you learn how to give injections or draw blood. After completing the classes most programs require a 100-hour internship where you get hands-on-training in a doctor’s office giving experience working with real patients. All of this intensive training allows the new administrative assistant to be hired and right away to be a productive member of the team.
